California's Car Culture
There is no doubt that America is a car culture country. You need to have a car to go where you are going. The public-transportation is not convenient. If you watch enough American movies, you'll find that the first present the parents give to their kids for their 18th birthday is A CAR. Having a car means you are in control of your life.
When I first moved to this country, I rode my bicycle to work and school. I only rode in 3 miles radius. I remembered there was one time, I was in the mood to ride my bike to a grocery store that is 4.8 miles(according to Google Map) away from my home. It took me an hour to ride there(maybe it's shorter, but for me it is like an hour long), and I couldn't ride back. I called a friend to pick me up.
When I first drove in this country, I was so happy and felt like I can go anywhere in the world by driving. I drove to any street that my bike couldn't reach. I was thrilled. Later I got a job in Concord, there is no Bart station(people here call the subway Bart) around. I got to drive to work. Then I shifted to another job around the Oakland Airport, there is no Bart station around there either. I needed to drive. Sometimes, I drove to LA just for fun. Once a year, I drove to Las Vegas to visit my friend. I don't want to tell you this, but I drove 90 miles per hour and passed the border of California to enter Las Vegas. The cop was parking on the side of the highway pretending he didn't see me. Welcome to Las Vegas.
People like to change cars here. They don't have patients to drive the same car forever. That like-to-change-car attitude makes the second car market so prosperous. One reason is that it's easy to buy a car here with a very low down payment; another reason is you can lease a luxury car like a BMW Z4 by just paying the same amount of money you are paying for a Honda Civic each month.
That, as you know, is the reason why we can sell you a car for very reasonable price that you need. Or, a luxury car with a very low price comparing with the same cars in Asian.
